Job Title: Data Center Technician
Position Summary
The Data Center Technician performs 24x7 shifts for Data Centers, handles incidents, and ensures safety requirements are met. Responsibilities include monitoring environmental conditions, power, and server hardware, as well as performing cabling tasks for copper and fiber. The role involves controlling access to the data center, managing work permits and material gate passes, installing equipment in racks, and documenting changes.
Scope of Work
- Physical Set-Up: Install all devices, including racking servers and devices, running cable, power, and KVM connections, and decommissioning servers when required.
- Break/Fix Support: Provide troubleshooting for hardware failures in Windows/Linux servers and coordinate hardware repairs with vendors.
- Operating System Setup: Perform basic operating system installations and server configurations.
- Monitoring and Recording: Monitor and log facility security, HVAC, fire detection/suppression systems, temperature, humidity, and critical power systems.
- Access Control: Ensure the data center is secure at all times, manage visitor sign-ins, and escort visitors as needed.
- Cabling Tasks: Perform copper and fiber cabling according to TIA standards (TIA 942).
- Shift Reporting: Prepare end-of-shift reports detailing data center activities.
- Vendor Interface: Collaborate with vendors such as HP, Dell, SUN, and Supermicro for hardware/system implementations.
- Miscellaneous Duties: Perform additional operational tasks as per SOPs approved by the Data Center Lead.
- Flexible Scheduling: Work flexible shifts, including nights and weekends, and participate in on-call rotations.
Competencies
- Ability to coordinate day-to-day activities and preventive maintenance with facility teams and IT staff.
- Proficiency in communication circuits and Ethernet cabling (structured copper and fiber optic).
- Intermediate knowledge of Windows Server and Linux configuration and troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including UPS, medium/low voltage circuits, and HVAC systems.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or diploma in computer science, IT, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of IT experience, including at least 2 years in Data Centers.
Additional Requirements
- Experience with APC infrastructure is preferred but not mandatory.
