Roles & Responsibilities

The Aircraft Maintenance Test Pilot/Aviation Safety Officer utilizes flight test techniques to perform test flights of aircraft to measure performance and handling to determine airworthiness following maintenance or modifications. This person will document programs, revise, and maintain work instructions, procedures, and visual aids. Prepares solutions to environmental or safety concerns. Coordinates and tracks audit program. Performs work under general supervision. Handles moderately complex issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Assists in preparing, maintaining, and updating health, safety, and environmental policy and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Performs test flights and demonstrates aircraft proficiency upon completion of aircraft maintenance or modifications on aircraft.
  • Determines in accordance with publications and procedures the airworthiness of aircraft prior to release for flight.
  • Performs troubleshooting procedures of aircraft on the ground and during flight and makes appropriate write-ups or gives verbal instructions to correct deficiencies.
  • Verifies forms and records used in the performance of maintenance to ensure they comply with work performed prior to ground or flight checks.
  • Run-up aircraft for alert status, as required, as well as perform launch and recovery operations for host nation flights.
  • Deploys in country, when required, to support contract requirements when maintenance test flights are anticipated.
  • Interprets meteorological data as it pertains to filing a flight plan for the navigational course of flight needed for a sortie and files a flight plan for all flights using authorized processes.
  • Ensures proper documentation is chronicled.
  • Capable of computing and annotating weight and balance logs for the aircraft.
  • Performs within the broad guidelines of duties and responsibilities with a significant choice of methods.
  • Retains the authority to select and implement goals and objectives within the execution of duties and responsibilities.
  • Directs interface with the PM, TL, PC, QC, and RSLFAC MTPs.
  • Responsible for flight safety, crew member currency, disposition of final MTF status ensuring aircraft airworthiness is validated.
  • Lead and manage aviation safety program.
  • Conduct thorough safety investigations and analyses, providing detailed reports and actionable recommendations.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to mitigate potential hazards and improve workplace safety.
  • Develop and maintain a Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSP) and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for site operations and activities.
  • Support Government and company site specific job investigations.
  • Conduct safety inspections.
  • Develop metrics and collect data regarding safety operations.
  • Perform and document a baseline hazard assessment
  • Investigate accidents and report.
  • Optimize safety processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Promote a culture of safety by leading by example and encouraging proactive safety practices among employees.
  • Establish and maintain operating controls to support seamless operations during organizational changes and growth.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs, continuously seeking opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on safety standards, regulations, and best practices. Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records and documentation.
  • Conduct quarterly Safety Council meetings.
  • This position operates with a significant degree of autonomy.
  • The ASO must be able to independently solve problems, manage resources, and ensure operational continuity.
  • Manage the duties and responsibilities for the Aviation Safety Program Coordinator.

Desired Candidate Profile

Qualifications

  • 1,000 hours of pilot in command time and have at least 300 hours in the same aircraft type and design (CH-47F).
  • Experience in CH-47 phase or RESET management.
  • Graduate of a US Military aviation maintenance test pilot course or civilian equivalent training and experience.
  • Demonstrated past performance and experience in maintenance on CH-47 Aircraft.
  • Proficient in the use of computer-hosted interactive technical manuals, aircraft maintenance forms, and other aircraft-related documentation.
  • Proficient in MS Office software.
  • Professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the customer in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Possess a valid issued driver s license.
  • Successfully pass an overseas deployment physical upon hire.
  • Class II Flight Physical required.
  • High school diploma.
  • Graduate of US Military Maintenance Test Pilot course, meeting all AR 95-2 requirements.
  • US Citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years' experience as an Aviation Maintenance Test Pilot, including GMTF, DARRT and BDAR experience in an operational unit.
  • 300 MTP hours in CH47F.
  • Battalion Level Maintenance Officer experience (BAMO).
  • Bachelor's degree or higher or 10 years as an MTP is equivalent.
  • US Military or civilian equivalent rotary-wing aviation Technical Inspector experience.
