Key Accountabilities
• Systems
o Develop the underground mine planning systems and procedures according to industry best practices
o Ensure all technical documentation, templates, reports, guidelines are clear and accurate.
• Strategic Planning
o Prepare and update Life of Mine (LOM) plans and annual budgets. Optimize stope designs and development sequences based on geological and geotechnical inputs.
o Lead underground project studies to support operational growth and efficiency.
o Develop, review, and optimize life-of-mine plans in line with business objectives.
o Manage budgeting and cost modelling to ensure financial targets and operational efficiency.
• Detailed design and execution
o Create detailed designs for mining areas with associated documentation (area notes, stope notes etc.), inclusive of all required mine infrastructure such as dewatering, ventilation, electrical, and backfill.
o Create executable plans and work instructions for underground operation, ensuring that mining operations are not delayed.
o Conduct project due diligence, identifying risks, opportunities, and regulatory compliance requirements.
o Plan and manage project timelines, resources, and milestones within budget and operational constraints.
• Operational Scheduling
o Develop detailed weekly, monthly, quarterly schedules for underground mining and infrastructure activities
o Coordinate with production and all technical services functions to ensure schedules are robust and achievable.
• Safety & Compliance
o Live the Maaden values and promote a safety-first culture
o Conduct ventilation surveys, issue ventilation instructions and maintain the underground primary ventilation model
o Adhere to health, safety, and environmental policies
o Conduct regular audits and risk assessments
• Performance Monitoring
o Track actual versus planned performance; analyze KPIs and recommend corrective actions to meet production and cost targets.
• Continuous Improvement
o Implement best practices and new technologies in mine planning and scheduling.
o Drive innovation in mining methods, technology adoption, and process optimization.
o Devise initiatives to reduce operational costs and enhance productivity.
• Leadership & Mentoring
o Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering technical and professional development.
• Support
o Provide technical support to operations, ensuring alignment with production goals and standards.
o Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for management.
o Any other duties as required to achieve operational goals.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field.
Minimum Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in underground mining operations, inclusive of underground hands-on practical experience at least 3 years of underground mine planning experience.
Ma’aden High Performance Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of mine planning, ground control, ventilation systems, and safety regulations.
- Proven ability to work in a systemized manner and establish procedures, guidelines and detailed technical documentation.
- Working experience for an underground mining contractor is highly desirable
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of underground mining methods, techniques, and equipment, with experience in longhole open stoping and paste filling.
- Proficiency in mine planning, design, and optimization software, especially Deswik and Ventsim, to develop and analyze mine designs, infrastructure designs, and production schedules on a short-, mid- and long-term timeframe.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in cost modelling and cost estimation, in Excel and Xeras
