Job Summary The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining process safety management (PSM) systems to prevent major accident hazards involving chemicals, energy, or hazardous operations. The role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies while supporting safe, reliable, and efficient operations. Key Responsibilities Process Safety Management Develop, implement, and maintain Process Safety Management (PSM) programs in accordance with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and applicable local regulations Lead and facilitate process hazard analyses (PHA) such as HAZOP, What-If, FMEA, LOPA, and Bowtie studies Track, manage, and close PHA recommendations and action items Maintain process safety information (PSI), including P&IDs, MSDS/SDS, relief system design data, and operating limits Risk Assessment & Incident Prevention Identify, evaluate, and mitigate process safety risks across operations Conduct or support incident investigations, root cause analyses (RCA), and development of corrective actions Support management of change (MOC) processes to ensure safe implementation of changes Perform layers of protection analysis (LOPA) and safeguard adequacy reviews Compliance & Auditing Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, API, NFPA, IEC, ISO) Support internal and external PSM audits and regulatory inspections Develop and maintain documentation, procedures, and records required for compliance Engineering & Operational Support Provide process safety input during project design, modifications, and startup activities (PSSR) Review and approve operating procedures, emergency response plans, and safe work practices Support relief system design, flare analysis, and consequence modeling Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to improve process safety performance Training & Culture Deliver process safety training and awareness programs for employees and contractors Promote a strong process safety culture and continuous improvement mindset Mentor junior engineers and support competency development Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field Master’s degree in Process Safety or Risk Engineering (preferred) Experience 10+ years of experience in process safety, chemical manufacturing, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, or related industries Hands-on experience with PHA facilitation and PSM implementation Skills & Knowledge Strong knowledge of process safety principles and risk assessment techniques Familiarity with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, API RP 750/754, IEC 61511, NFPA standards Experience with consequence modeling tools (e.g., PHAST, ALOHA, Safeti, Bow Tie XP) Excellent analytical, communication, and facilitation skills Ability to work cross-functionally and influence at all organizational levels
