Lead Marine Structures Engineer

  1. Key Responsibilities:Business Development and Sustainable Solutions:
  • Facilitate the maintenance of personal profiles and resumes, tracking existing capabilities, and strategically addressing future customer capability requirements, aligning with the client's aspirations to be recognized globally as an authority in sustainability solutions.
  • Encourage positive working relationships with external parties such as customers, suppliers, and contractors, fostering alliances that contribute to the client's commitment to delivering sustainable change.
  • Engage in networking, negotiations, strategic alliancing, and cost-saving efforts that reflect the client's promise to be the straight-talking partner the industry needs for sustainable transformation.
  • Steward the maintenance of pricing records, ensuring transparency and alignment with the client's tagline, "Delivering Sustainable Change."
  • Support proposals by developing engineering execution strategies that prioritize sustainability, reviewing costs, writing proposal content, and presenting to customers.
  • Project management of planning, feasibility, design and implementation projects, including development of project proposals and project budgets (includes CTR estimate build ups)
  • Preparation of strategic, marketing and business development plans for the positioning and winning of Ports and Marine Structures business across Africa, or elsewhere as opportunities arise.
  • Responsibility for the commercial and technical execution and delivery of regional Marine Structures projects, including annual budgeting and profitability.
  • Responsibility for building of relationships with key regional Port clients such as Saudi Aramco and Saudi Ports Authority.
  • Preparation of feasibility and design criteria reports for marine structures engineering works such as quay walls, jetties, breakwaters, etc.
  • Identify technology development and training requirements, including participation at international conferences.
  • Co-operate with the Port Planning and Marine Structures Teams globally and other project groups and personnel to set and monitor strategic objectives regarding technologies, in particular coastal modelling software and data sources.
  • Input to coaching, teaching, mentoring and effective supervision of assigned personnel.
  • Ensures communication flow, both verbal and written, is maintained within the Ports & Marine Structural Engineering group and with other engineering disciplines.
  • Assists with the upkeep of storage and listing of all Ports & Marine Structural Engineering specific standards stored on the computer network.
  • Coordinates Ports & Marine Structural Engineering design activities with other design and engineering groups
  • Represents the Marine Structural Engineering area in meetings with suppliers, subcontractors, licensors, clients, and other Company disciplines, and produces documentation required for conference or meeting notes.
  • Prepare marketing material and building client relationships.
  • Business travel as required.
  1. Budgeting, Engineering Operations, and Sustainability Leadership:
  • Participate in budgeting and manage engineering operations to the budget, ensuring that sustainability-related projects.
  • Administer engineering software licensing and costs, ensuring the tools used align with the client's commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions.
  • Ensure mentoring/training requirements are met, fostering a culture of continuous improvement in sustainable engineering practices.
  • Contribute to dispute resolution efforts with an understanding of sustainable conflict resolution principles.
  • Ensure cross-discipline technical work and team activities meet all health, safety, environmental, and security requirements, prioritizing sustainability in all aspects.
  1. Technical Competency, Quality Oversight, and Global Standardization:
  • Preferably 10 years plus relevant experience in all facets of maritime engineering, including design of marine terminals and structures.
  • Experience in port planning and operations is desirable.
  • Dredging experience would be an asset.
  • Experience with various maritime and structural engineering related software tools
  • Expert knowledge of maritime design standards
  • Experience with specialist software (i.e. Slope-W, OPTIMOOR) is desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in preparing proposals and delivering presentations.
  • Strong project management skills, particularly as regards large and/or complex projects.
  • Team leadership and junior engineer/designer mentoring and coaching experience
  • Extensive experience with: Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Experience with MS Project and/or other scheduling products
  • Financial management of projects and resources, including budgeting
  • Own engineering technical competency and quality programs with a focus on integrating sustainable practices.
  • Oversee the technical competency of team members within the location, ensuring alignment with the client's global sustainability standards.
  • Ensure adherence to company processes, engineering and design practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications with a keen eye on sustainability.
  • Support global standardization of equipment specifications, drawings, and document templates, incorporating sustainability measures.
  • Facilitate discipline checking and technical peer reviews with a focus on sustainable engineering practices.
  1. Project Requirements, Execution, and Innovation:
  • Facilitate meeting project requirements using engineering guidelines, programs, and resource management, prioritizing sustainability in project execution.
  • Participate in project execution strategy and planning, driving innovative solutions, technology advances, and methods that align with the client's commitment to sustainable change.
  • Work with Project Management Teams to take corrective actions regarding project issues, staffing requirements, scope changes, and project progression with a sustainability lens.
  • Review and authorize work done by Discipline Managers, ensuring sustainability criteria are met.

Purpose of the Role: Supervises, assigns, and schedules Ports & Marine Structural Engineering activities for the Coastal & Marine Business Unit under the general direction of the Coastal & Marine BU Manager as well as the regional Ports & Coastal Manager. Technical and business management of all ports & marine structures engineering elements of projects executed within the Coastal & Marine area. Management of all marine structural engineers and technical and career development mentoring of all ports and marine structures engineers.
