1. Position Summary
The Site Engineer is responsible for supervising and coordinating site activities for railway civil works, earthworks, bridges, culverts, drainage and track-laying. The role ensures that construction is executed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, quality requirements and the project programme.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily construction activities and ensure compliance with approved IFC drawings, specifications and method statements.
- Coordinate works involving site clearance, excavation, filling, embankments, formation layers, subgrade and slope protection.
- Supervise reinforced-concrete works, including formwork, reinforcement, embedded items, concrete placement, curing and repairs.
- Monitor construction of bridge foundations, piles, pile caps, piers, abutments, bearings, decks and approach structures.
- Supervise culverts, drainage channels, utility crossings, retaining structures and associated protection works.
- Coordinate trackwork activities, including formation preparation, sub-ballast, ballast, sleepers, rails, turnouts, welding and track alignment.
- Ensure construction works comply with required line, level, gradient, coordinates and dimensional tolerances.
- Coordinate with surveyors for setting-out, elevation checks, alignment verification and as-built surveys.
- Plan daily and weekly activities based on the approved construction programme and available resources.
- Prepare labour, plant, materials and equipment requirements for assigned work fronts.
- Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers and site crews and monitor their productivity and performance.
- Review drawings and identify discrepancies, constructability issues and interface conflicts.
- Prepare requests for information and technical queries when design clarification is required.
- Coordinate with engineering, quality, HSE, planning, commercial and logistics teams.
- Prepare inspection requests and coordinate inspections with QA/QC personnel and the Engineer/Consultant.
- Ensure materials used on-site are approved, inspected and stored correctly.
- Monitor test results for soil, aggregates, concrete, reinforcement, welding, ballast and track components.
- Identify non-conforming work and coordinate corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure work fronts are ready before commencing construction activities.
- Monitor quantities and maintain accurate records of completed work for progress measurement.
- Prepare daily site reports covering manpower, equipment, activities, quantities, delays and constraints.
- Maintain records of site instructions, inspections, test results and approved changes.
- Support preparation of red-line drawings, as-built records and handover documentation.
- Ensure compliance with approved HSE plans, permit-to-work requirements and risk-control measures.
- Participate in toolbox talks, coordination meetings and progress meetings.
- Assist in resolving technical and construction issues affecting safety, quality, cost or schedule.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering or a related discipline.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the Saudi Council of Engineers is preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant construction experience, including at least 3 years on major infrastructure projects.
- Experience in railway, metro or transportation projects is strongly preferred.
- Practical experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Earthworks and railway formation;
- Bridges and reinforced-concrete structures;
- Culverts and drainage works;
- Trackwork and track laying.
- Previous experience in Saudi Arabia or the GCC is preferred.
- Experience working with a main contractor or major subcontractor is desirable.
- Proven ability to supervise multiple work crews and subcontractors.
- Excellent written and spoken English; Arabic is an advantage.
