Job Purpose
The Laboratory Chemist is responsible for performing chemical tests, experiments, and analyses on catalysts used in oil refining and petrochemical industries.
The role supports production, quality control, and process optimization activities, and operates under the supervision of the Production Supervisor / Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Testing
- Conduct routine and non-routine testing of catalyst samples in accordance with approved procedures and work instructions.
- Collect samples at various stages of the production and regeneration processes.
- Prepare, label, store, and analyse samples with full traceability and accuracy.
- Record test results in laboratory databases, logbooks, and reporting systems.
- Prepare analytical reports, charts, graphs, and spreadsheets for internal review.
Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is kept in good working condition and report any malfunction.
- Clean laboratory equipment and maintain a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
- Participate in equipment calibration schedules and verification activities.
Quality Control & External Coordination
- Send samples to approved external laboratories for specialized analysis when required.
- Participate in inter-laboratory (round-robin) testing and quality comparison exercises.
- Maintain accurate records of customer samples received and samples sent externally.
Inventory & Documentation
- Ensure proper storage of catalyst samples and maintain complete sample registers.
- Monitor and maintain adequate stock levels of laboratory consumables, chemicals, and spare parts.
- Coordinate with stores and inventory personnel for replenishment and stock control.
- Maintain and periodically check the laboratory First Aid box and safety supplies.
Training & Support
- Assist in training plant and production personnel on basic catalyst sampling and testing procedures.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to laboratory practices, safety, and efficiency.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all laboratory safety rules, HSE procedures, and company policies at all times.
- Ensure proper handling, labeling, and disposal of chemicals and waste materials.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
Skills
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry or
- Diploma in Chemistry
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in catalyst testing, oil refining, petrochemical, or industrial process environments
- Preferred Skills:
- Basic knowledge of industrial catalysts and chemical testing methods
- Familiarity with laboratory instruments and data recording systems
- Good attention to detail and documentation discipline
- Ability to work in an industrial / production-oriented environment
- Basic computer skills (Excel, data entry, reporting)
- Fluent in English
