Involves the centralized processing and sterilization of patient care, reusable devices, instruments and equipment. These items are held in storage and then distributed, along with prepackaged, pre sterilized supplies, using a distribution cart to the various patient care areas of the hospital including the operating rooms and dental clinics.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties1. Receives contaminated devices, instruments and equipment in the decontamination area and reduces the bio-burden, being sure to always don personal protective equipment. Uses chemical disinfectants and sterilants according to safety procedures.2. Operates the decontamination and terminal sterilization equipment and reports all malfunctions or changes in the parameters.3. Sorts, inspects, assembles, and wraps or packages all decontaminated items.4. Assures proper sterility of all processed items by adhering to established sterilization procedures; including loading, unloading, storing, and handling techniques and sterilization assurance monitors. Incubates biological monitors and records all monitor results according to established procedures. Applies tracking labels.5. Prepares single items and various sets as designated.6. Stocks Central Sterile Supply Distribution (CSSD) carts with processed instruments according to the predetermined items and quantities necessary to bring the carts to par level.7. Reduces microbial growth and the transmission of microorganisms by daily damp dusting with the approved hospital disinfectant. Inspects and clean sterilization equipment in CSSD according to established schedule. Experience Requirements8. Completes all requisitions and forms for issues during the work shift. Effects emergency issues from the medical stores area.9. Requisitions, supplies and restock shelves with products necessary for CSSD operation. Rotates stock on a First IN –First OUT basis. Checks all items for sterilization.10. Maintains control of traffic in all restricted areas of the department including the proper use of surgical scrub attire.11. Assists in new employee orientation.12. Follows all Hospital’s related Policies and Procedures.13. Participates in self and others' education, training and development, as applicable.14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education Bachelor’s or Associate Degree/Diploma in Central Sterile Supply Distribution Technician, or other related discipline is required.
Experience Required One (1) year of related experience with Bachelor’s or two (2) years with Associate Degree/Diploma is required.
