UCMDB Specialist / Configuration Management Architect

Role Overview

The UCMDB Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, stability, automation, and reliability of the Configuration Management Database using OpenText UCMDB native capabilities.

The role focuses on discovery enablement, data quality, reconciliation, automation, service modeling support, and architectural governance to ensure UCMDB serves as a trusted source of configuration and inventory data for operational and management decision making.

Key Responsibilities and Scope of Work

1. Discovery Enablement and Coverage Optimization

  • Configure, review, and continuously optimize discovery probes, scopes, credentials, and discovery jobs.
  • Ensure discovered Configuration Items (CIs) accurately reflect the real production environment.
  • Onboard newly introduced infrastructure and application assets into UCMDB discovery.
  • Identify and close discovery gaps through targeted and scoped discovery executions.

2. Data Quality Management and Reconciliation Control

  • Monitor incoming discovery data and how it is processed through reconciliation rules.
  • Ensure discovered data correctly updates existing CIs without creating duplicates.
  • Reduce data inconsistencies while respecting platform reconciliation limitations.
  • Maintain CI integrity across multiple data sources and discovery mechanisms.

3. Automation of CI Population and Lifecycle Updates

  • Rely on scheduled discovery and integration jobs to automatically populate and update CI data.
  • Minimize manual CI creation to preserve consistency and long-term data reliability.
  • Ensure continuous synchronization between UCMDB and the actual environment.

4. Inventory Visibility, Reporting, and Governance

  • Design and maintain scoped TQL views for inventory visibility and control.
  • Build scheduled inventory and trend reports covering discovered assets, changes, and growth patterns.
  • Provide periodic reports to operations and management on CMDB health and coverage.

5. Discovery Troubleshooting and Recovery

  • Diagnose discovery failures and data gaps by analyzing probe health, job execution logs, scope definitions, and credential configurations.
  • Perform targeted rediscovery to recover missing or incomplete CI data.
  • Ensure rapid restoration of accurate discovery coverage following failures.

6. Performance-Aware Platform Usage

  • Design TQL views, queries, and reports with platform performance constraints in mind.
  • Avoid oversized or unscoped queries that may impact system stability.
  • Promote the use of scheduled reports and scoped views to maintain optimal performance.

7. Service Modeling Enablement

  • Support service modeling initiatives by ensuring discovered CIs and relationships accurately reflect business and technical services.
  • Enable dependency mapping to support operations, incident management, and impact analysis.

8. Upgrade and Patching Support

  • Support UCMDB upgrades and patching activities.
  • Validate discovery, reconciliation, integrations, and reporting behavior before and after upgrades.
  • Ensure continuity, compatibility, and platform stability across version changes.

9. Design and Architecture Review

  • Review the existing UCMDB architecture, including discovery layout, data flows, integrations, and usage patterns.
  • Identify scalability, maintainability, and data quality risks.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to improve CMDB maturity and long-term sustainability.

Deliverables

  • Optimized discovery configurations and coverage metrics
  • Reduced CI duplication and improved reconciliation accuracy
  • Automated and reliable CI population processes
  • Scoped TQL views and scheduled inventory reports
  • Discovery health and recovery procedures
  • Architecture review findings and improvement recommendations
  • Stable and performance-optimized UCMDB environment
