Key Responsibilities
- Roast specialty-grade green coffee using drum or air roasters to established profiles and quality standards
- Develop, document, and refine roast profiles to highlight origin characteristics and intended use (espresso, filter, etc.)
- Monitor and adjust variables such as time, temperature, airflow, and charge weight
- Conduct regular cupping sessions for quality control, profile validation, and defect identification
- Evaluate green coffee quality and assist with green coffee intake, storage, and inventory management
- Maintain roasting equipment and perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance
- Record and analyze roast data using roasting software and production logs
- Collaborate with sourcing, QC, and retail teams on seasonal coffees and product releases
- Ensure compliance with food safety, workplace safety, and cleanliness standards
- Support packaging, labeling, and production scheduling as needed
Skills
Technical & Coffee Skills
- Demonstrated experience roasting specialty coffee (typically 1–3+ years, depending on role level)
- Strong understanding of roast development, heat transfer, and flavor chemistry
- Sensory skills including cupping, flavor identification, and consistency evaluation
- Familiarity with specialty coffee standards and grading (SCA protocols preferred)
- Experience with roasting software, data logging, and production workflows
Operational & Work Skills
- High attention to detail and ability to maintain consistency at scale
- Comfortable working in a production environment with repetitive and physically active tasks
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment or roast issues calmly and methodically
- Strong time management and ability to meet production deadlines
- Clear communication and willingness to collaborate across teams
