Job Title: Vehicle Maintenance Technician

Job Overview:

The Vehicle Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining vehicles to ensure they are safe, reliable, and operate efficiently. This role involves routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and troubleshooting mechanical issues. Technicians are also responsible for diagnosing and fixing vehicle malfunctions, and ensuring that all repairs meet safety standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Vehicle Inspection & Diagnosis:

• Conduct thorough inspections of vehicles to identify mechanical, electrical, and safety issues.
• Diagnose problems with engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other vehicle components using diagnostic tools and equipment.
• Identify the cause of malfunctioning systems and recommend solutions for repairs or replacement.

1. Routine Maintenance:

• Perform scheduled maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotations, and brake checks.
• Replace and maintain parts such as spark plugs, belts, hoses, and batteries.
• Monitor fluid levels (engine oil, brake fluid, coolant) and ensure proper vehicle lubrication and performance.

1. Repairs and Replacements:

• Repair or replace damaged or faulty vehicle components, including engines, transmissions, steering systems, and suspension parts.
• Work on electrical systems, including lights, wiring, and battery connections.
• Repair or replace tires, exhaust systems, and brake components.
• Use specialized tools and equipment to perform repairs according to manufacturer specifications.

1. Record Keeping & Reporting:

• Maintain accurate records of vehicle inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
• Document parts used for repairs and track labor hours for billing or tracking purposes.
• Report any recurring issues or potential safety hazards to supervisors or fleet managers.

1. Safety Compliance:

• Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities comply with safety regulations, vehicle standards, and company policies.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including handling hazardous materials like oil, coolant, and batteries.
• Test vehicles after repairs to ensure proper functioning and safety.

1. Customer Service (if applicable):

• Communicate with customers or supervisors to explain vehicle issues and repair needs.
• Provide recommendations for additional repairs or preventative maintenance to improve vehicle performance.
• Maintain a positive, professional demeanor when interacting with customers, if working in a customer-facing environment.

1. Emergency Repairs:

• Respond to emergency breakdowns or urgent repair requests as needed, ensuring minimal downtime for the vehicles.
• Troubleshoot and resolve vehicle issues in the field if required, using mobile diagnostic tools and equipment.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary training in automotive technology or a related field is a plus).
• Experience: Previous experience as an automotive technician or mechanic, preferably with experience in vehicle maintenance or repair.
• Technical Skills:Strong knowledge of vehicle systems (engine, transmission, suspension, electrical, etc.).
• Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, hand tools, and repair equipment.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and repair guides.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues accurately.
• Attention to Detail: Ensure that all repairs and maintenance work is completed to high standards.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy parts and work in physically demanding conditions (e.g., bending, lifting, working under vehicles).
• Communication Skills: Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical individuals (e.g., customers or supervisors).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certifications:ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification or similar certifications in vehicle repair and maintenance.
• Manufacturer-specific certifications or training (e.g., Ford, GM, Toyota).
• Experience with Fleet Vehicles: Experience working with commercial or fleet vehicles may be an advantage.
• Specialized Skills: Knowledge of hybrid or electric vehicle systems, advanced diagnostics, and specialized repair techniques.

• Vehicle Maintenance Technicians typically work in workshops, garages, or service stations, where they repair vehicles and perform routine maintenance.
