Storekeeper Job Description

Position Summary: A Storekeeper is responsible for managing and maintaining the inventory of goods within a warehouse, retail, or storage facility. They ensure that products are properly stored, recorded, and accounted for, and assist in the distribution of goods as needed. Storekeepers are crucial in ensuring that stock is efficiently tracked and replenished, and that the storage area is organized and safe.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Inventory Management:
  • Maintain accurate records of all stock and supplies, tracking incoming and outgoing inventory.
  • Monitor stock levels and report discrepancies or shortages.
  • Organize and store inventory in a manner that ensures easy access and prevents damage.
  • Regularly conduct stock counts (manual or via systems) and reconcile with records.
  1. Stock Handling and Distribution:
  • Receive and check incoming deliveries against purchase orders and invoices.
  • Properly label, store, and stack inventory items in the appropriate locations.
  • Prepare and issue goods based on requests from departments or for shipment.
  • Assist in packing and shipping of goods as required.
  1. Safety and Organization:
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized store or warehouse environment.
  • Ensure that products are stored properly according to their specific storage requirements (e.g., temperature-sensitive items).
  • Implement safety procedures to prevent accidents and injuries, including using proper equipment and handling materials safely.
  1. Stock Replenishment:
  • Monitor inventory levels and reorder products as necessary, ensuring the store is adequately stocked.
  • Assist with the preparation of orders for re-supply based on consumption patterns or customer demands.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of goods received, issued, and transferred.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports on stock levels, movements, and inventory forecasts.
  • Ensure all relevant documentation (e.g., receipts, delivery notes) is properly filed and accessible.
  1. Collaboration:
  • Work closely with warehouse supervisors, purchasing departments, and other relevant teams to ensure the smooth flow of goods.
  • Assist with the training of new staff in inventory management and store procedures.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Storekeeper or in a similar role.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to spot inventory discrepancies.
  • Basic math skills for inventory management and record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of stock control software or inventory management systems is a plus.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with health and safety standards in storage areas.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree or certification in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field is a plus.
  • 1-2 years of experience in storekeeping, inventory management, or warehouse operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move materials (up to 50 lbs).
  • Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

This position is key to ensuring efficient inventory flow and maintaining accurate records, which helps prevent stock shortages, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
