Job Details

The PWHT Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and documenting Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) activities on welded components such as pipes, pressure vessels, tanks, boilers, and structural components. The technician must ensure that all heat treatment activities are performed safely and in accordance with approved procedures, WPS/PQR requirements, project specifications, and applicable codes and standards.

Role & responsibilities

  • Perform Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of welded joints as per approved procedures and project specifications.
  • Set up and operate electrical resistance heating (ERH) or induction heating equipment.
  • Install heating elements, ceramic pads, thermocouples, insulation and temperature control equipment.
  • Correctly position and connect thermocouples around the weld area.
  • Set required heating, soaking and cooling parameters in the PWHT control system.
  • Monitor temperature continuously during heating, soaking and cooling cycles.
  • Operate temperature recorders, controllers and data logging systems.
  • Monitor PWHT charts and identify abnormal temperature variations.
  • Maintain proper records of PWHT activities and prepare PWHT reports/charts.
  • Verify equipment and instruments are properly calibrated before use.
  • Inspect heating cables, thermocouples, connectors and electrical connections before operation.
  • Carry out basic troubleshooting of PWHT equipment and report technical problems.
  • Coordinate with Welding, QC/NDT, Inspection and Production teams .
  • Follow approved WPS, PWHT procedures, method statements and ITP requirements.
  • Ensure proper insulation of the heating zone to maintain uniform temperature.
  • Ensure correct identification and traceability of weld joints.
  • Maintain housekeeping and safe working conditions at the work location.
  • Follow company HSE procedures, permit-to-work requirements and electrical safety requirements.
  • Use appropriate PPE and comply with site safety regulations.
  • Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions or abnormal equipment operation.
  • Assist QC/Inspection personnel during PWHT inspection and verification.
  • Maintain daily activity reports, equipment records and temperature charts.

Required Technical Knowledge

The candidate should have knowledge of:

  • Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH)

  • Thermocouples and temperature measurement
  • Temperature controllers and recorders
  • Heating and cooling rates
  • Soaking temperature and holding time
  • PWHT charts and data logging
  • Welding procedures and WPS/PQR
  • Weld joint identification and traceability
  • Basic electrical safety
  • PWHT-related quality documentation

Codes & Standards

Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as:

  • ASME Section VIII
  • ASME Section IX
  • ASME B31.3
  • ASME B31.1
  • AWS requirements, where applicable
  • API/project specifications, where applicable
  • Client-specific PWHT procedures and specifications

Preferred candidate profile

Qualification

  • ITI / Diploma / Technical qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, Welding or related field.
  • PWHT-specific training/certification will be an advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum: 2 to 3 years of relevant PWHT experience.
  • Preferred: 3 to 5 years of experience in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Refinery, Power Plant, Pipeline or Pressure Vessel projects.
  • GCC project experience will be an advantage.

Personal Skills

  • Good understanding of technical instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a site team.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet project schedules.
  • Strong safety awareness.
  • Ability to maintain accurate technical records.

HSE Requirements

  • Use appropriate PPE.
  • Maintain safe distances from hot surfaces and energized equipment.
  • Follow hot work and work-at-height requirements where applicable.
  • Ensure proper grounding/earthing of electrical equipment.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment damage or electrical hazards.


Desired Candidate Profile
