Supervisor - Occupational Therapy "Job Details" Job Description The Occupational Therapy Supervisor will work across the inpatient units and will be responsible for the day-to-day operational supervision and oversight of occupational therapy services delivered to acute inpatients at Sidra Medicine. Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Therapy, the post-holder will supervise and manage all clinical and administrative operations of the inpatient OT service. You will be responsible for development and implementation of strategic operational plans targeted to the delivery of high quality, patient centered care. This includes the day-to-day operational leadership and supervision of the inpatient OT staff to support this. The Occupational Therapy Supervisor is expected to carry an inpatient clinical caseload; therefore it is essential that applicants have significant clinical experience and expertise in a relevant acute inpatient occupational therapy setting (pediatrics) . KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES Leadership Responsible for supervision of all discipline specific staff (OT’s) within the clinical team they lead. This includes training, performance appraisal and management and attendance management on a day to day basis. Works collaboratively with the Manager - Occupational Therapy to recruit and on-board new staff. Provides day to day oversight of clinical quality and safety in all areas of designated responsibility. Ensures the effective orientation, precepting and support of new staff and students. Provides a welcoming work environment and monitors and tracks individuals’ progress. Counsels and/or disciplines staff when appropriate. Manages staffing levels, roster and attendance for designated teams and clinical areas. Ensures daily workload distribution among staff at morning huddles. Ensures safe patient care by making patient assignments based on patient acuity and skill mix. Makes recommendations to the Manager regarding decisions that have a unit/ service impact. Makes day to day decisions regarding unit operations that impact staff within their clinical team and service areas as designated. Serves as a professional and role model for staff and is an advocate for patients and their families demonstrating behaviors consistent with the organizational/ education competency framework, Sidra’s values, policies, procedures and guidelines. Leads in planning and program direction for their designated service areas in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives. Evaluates and ensures that clinical documentation, diagnoses and plans of care are integrated and effective in delivering an individual plan of care through supporting staff in audit processes. Responsible for monitoring and implementation of quality improvement activities to support the achievement of agreed key performance indicators for self and unit. Promotes a safe environment and safe patient care by embracing a safety culture and identifying areas of risk. Supports professional and clinical growth of clinical team and collaborates with the Manager - Occupational Therapy and OT Leadership Team in planning, implementation and evaluation of patient/ family and staff education. Applies problem solving techniques and evidence based solutions to service related issues. Evaluates and ensures appropriate escalation of issues to meet patient/family/staff needs and resolve conflicts. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families and colleagues regarding any complaints immediately and assists in the investigation of written complaints. Supports the retention of all staff by creating a healthy work environment that facilitates teamwork, and treats colleagues, patients/families and visitors with dignity and respect at all times. Ensures relevant information is communicated to all staff effectively and efficiently. Maintains effective administrative processes in the service and reviews and revises service policies and procedures as required. Contributes to the achievement of cost efficiency savings in the service and maintains an awareness of resource utilization, exercising care in the ordering and use of equipment and materials. Reports equipment failures, safety and security issues, and/or reduction of supply inventory. Leads Performance and Quality Improvement activities and committees on the service as assigned. Deputizes for the Manager - Occupational Therapy as required. Identifies risks and applies risk management processes. Applies quality and safety processes and continuous improvement processes. Clinical Acts as a senior clinical specialist/clinical lead in agreed area of clinical responsibility. Provides in-patient and/or out-patient occupational therapy care as appropriate to patient demand and specialty clinical skills. Provides therapy care that is patient centered including setting meaningful goals for independence in daily activities. Where appropriate modifies task, person or environment to enable participation in daily occupations such as bathing or dressing. Where appropriate assesses the patient for adaptations and use of specialist equipment. Contributes to patient diagnosis through the use of specialist assessments and observations. Provides high quality, evidenced based patient care including assessment and occupation based treatment within the designated specialist clinical area. Provides appropriate cross cover into other specialist clinical areas as required, ensuring they have the required skills and competencies to do so. Demonstrates an understanding of evidence-based healthcare methodology and its ability to positively impact patient outcomes. Supports clinical leads on the integration and evaluation of research into practice within areas of responsibility and areas of clinical specialty. Uses appropriate clinical outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care. Professional Practice Provides documented evidence of own performance and maintenance of skills with appropriate continuing professional development activities consistent with both the specialty post and leadership responsibilities. Responsible for maintaining a Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners Continuing Professional Development Profile for licensure. Responsible for maintaining up to date mandatory Life Support Training requirements as directed by MoPH and Sidra (e.g. BLS, AED etc). Leads service activities that contribute to excellence in outcomes, a positive patient experience and a healthy professional environment. Provides a lead role in the achievement of clinical quality outcome indicators and patient satisfaction. Leads service based Performance and Quality Improvement activities and organizational committees as assigned. Leads in quality improvement activities linked to occupational therapy strategic priorities and professional practice model. Feedback to Manager regularly about service operational needs (eg. clinical service development, staffing, clinical service provision etc.) and leads operational service planning activities. Leads in the continued development, implementation, and evaluation of Sidra Policy and Procedures to align with international best practices. Promotes and supports a suitable learning environment to support and teach staff to develop through regular supervision sessions and ongoing education (eg. conferences, inservices, journal club etc.). Coordinates with the Manager in regards to staff absences (eg. sick, annual, study, maternity). Models effective communication and teamwork. Treats colleagues, patients, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
